Unreadable Word97 file names

I work with a Netware5 server and Win98/95 workstations. One of my stations cannot read file names or open files going through the shortcuts for Word. These files are stored on a network drive. If I browse the network drive and double-click the worddoc it will open up otherwise using word an I/O error occurs. I have reinstalled Office97 and applies all the patches and reran my IBM_ENU for novell client setup to no effect. What is causing this? I think it has to be more closely related to the network since I can see and open files by opening them up in their directory. Any help would be appreciated.
