unwanted hiden software

I have removed software programs using the control panel – uninstall programs tool.
This at times will leave some of the program in the machine. Is there a way to get all of the unwanted program cleared? It seems that each time I remove a program some is left behind. I have windows 7 and I think the same thing happened in Vista.
What do you suggest?
