usb external hard drive reports no media on XP computer management

I had the usb drive successfully installed on my XP machine. I used half for backups for my XP data and the other half for fedora 7. When I tried to install ubuntu something go scrambled on the usb drive. Windows could not see the drive at all. When I ran ubuntu-live, I was able to see the XP data but could not see the other partition. In my (unsuccessful) efforts to retrieve the data I managed to lose ALL the data. So I formatted the drive using ubuntu but it could not access the drive when I was finished. Windows can now see the drive using computer management but it displays “no media”. The drive does not display on My Computer. I would greatly appreciate a way to restore the usb drive.
