Visioneer scaner and NT4

We have been trying to install a Visioneer 5300 scanner with PaperPort 6.1 on an NT4 PC. The PaperPort software refuses to work, when it starts up it generates a Dr. Watson error about link.exe. PaperPort continues to start, but shows no links. Any suggestions.
