I have approximately 18 years of VMS systems administration experience. I was just caught up in a downsizing effort at my company. According to my VP of IT I was selected because they do not think that VMS is a viable platform for the business dueto the HP/Compaq merger and that the company has had staggering losses this year. He was very happy with me and my performance as an administrator and project leader. I also have quite a bit of experience as a consultant in VMS issues.
I am unsure what to do now. I am aware that there are a handful of senior VMS positions in different places in the country. I could go on the road and consult again. I could retrain and try to do something else. I could try to launch into IT leadership based on some of the project leadership background I have. So much of this quandry has to do with the lifespan of VMS and the marketplace’s overwhelming disapproval of the HP/Compaq merger. I’ve certainly sought to broaden my skills in other areas, but when you are fully dedicated to supporting VMS, then you do everything you can to do a great job in supporting the system that you are responsible to support.
Wisdom appreciated – thanks!
