I run an office with a mixed bag of Windows OS’s from 2K XP and 98se. A handfull of the W2K systems have been running steadily for nearly 6 months. The only time I shut them down is to update any antivirus or os updates, as well as cleaning out the dust from the fans.
There are very valid arguments within this thread concerning the stability of M$’s OS’s (or lack thereof)and the glorious benefits of the Unix based systems. They all have their pro’s and con’s. The problems with ALL OF THEM is when you begin to add foreign plug-ins and other software to the systems, they begin to degrade and break down. Sure, the OS’s could be better! Sure, they SHOULD be cheaper! The reliability of any software is directly linked to its hardware and symbiotic software environment. (That is why APPLE has been so successful with its various publications).
Frankly it amazes me that Microsoft can make their OS’s work at all on so many different hardware combinations,(both cheap and high end).
The black box approach is likely a good idea providing the privacy isssues are brought to light and proven safe.
