Weird Groupwise problem

About a quarter of the messages expected in my mailbox were actually in the trash. I checked cleanup options and all appeared OK there. The deleted messages were apparently of random dates, from yesterday back a couple of years! I have undeleted them, but am intrigued about why this happened and want to avoid losing message.
