What happens if you disconnect a hard drive while its scanning

Hi, I disconnected my friend’s hard drive (which he stores media on) from his iMac. The computer was locked so I thought it would be ok but he said it was being scanned and now everything will be lost. Is that true? Is there anyway to recover it if so?
