What is buffer overrun

I keep getting box coming up that says
Microsoft Visual c++ Runtime library
Buffer over run detected.
Program C\windows\explorer.Exe
Can somebody please tell me what this means and how to fix it. i am tired of loosing everything every time it pops up.
