What is the future of x3d? And where are all the tutorials?

As a web developer, constantly looking for new technology to make my sites more interesting, I’m currently examining x3d, the successor of VRML. There is a standards movement (www.web3d.org), there are some implementations (e.g. www.thex3dxperience.com), but unlike many other technologies, there are only few resources with actual good examples, tutorials, discussions. There seems to be something going on at the Java side (xj3d) too… Is there a place for x3d in the future? Are there colleagues currently programming on such implementations? Where are the tutorials? Are there any decent books written about the subject? Is this a good solution for cross-platform 3D content? What are the alternatives?
