Why can’t I download any programs on my hp desktop pavilion slimline?

Every time I try to download a program another screen always pops up then closes. The “internet connection has been lossed” sign always pop-up. I can’t download itunes or different songs from websites such as mp3skull.com etc. What is wrong and how can i fix it?
