Why can’t I record on Audacity from my USB using Vista OS?

First of all, the selection box usually specified for input choice is not functional, and secondly, in prefferences it won’t let me choose the USB input, and on a friend’s computer that would, there is still no sound, and i’m sure it isn’t the hardware. What is the problem, and how can I fix it?
