Win 8 upgrade on a primary new SSD

The SSD will not accept fresh XP install from DVD drive. Win 8 DVD installs fine but later get message hat load was not an upgrade and won’t run.

Alternative is to sequentially load both on a hard drive and clone. Does that work, or is there another method that does work?
