WIN ME Explorer

Recently I restored to factory conditions. When I now want to use Win Explorer to move files, the tree directory will not show, just a shaded grey area shows. I can get other things in there like history, media, favorites, etc. Does anyone know what I might do to fix the problem? It matters not how I try to open at this point, right clicking start, or start and acc or from the my computer icon.
