win xp hangs on welcome to windows

I am running win Xp pro service pack 2, on a compaq nx9010 laptop,it was hanging on on the welcome to windows screen, even in safe mode,I tried to do a repair using xp cd,it copied the files and now it hangs soon after the first windows xp screen the one before the installation progress screen.Please help
