Windows 2000 locks up laptop at shutdown

Anybody have a fix for a Compaq Armada 128MB mem, >333 Mhz, single partition laptop with a new upgrade from NT to Win2000 that locks up so hard at shutdown that you have to remove the battery to recover. Once the shutdown screen goes away, the screen goes blank with just a blinking curser in the top left.
