Windows desktop and open folder won’t re

Hello, still looking for an answer here. This is a tough problem. If I unzip or download files to the desktop, they don’t appear unless I hit F5 and manually refresh the view. Sometimes I even have to open File Explorer and close it then hit F5 to refresh. The PC has a Creative Labs TNT 2 Ultra video card. Even after a fresh format and reinstall of Windows 98 SE the problem persists. Please help. I’ve looked everywhere and tried everything I could think of!
