Windows Freezes up randomly

Recently I installed DirectX 7.a, After re-booting I found that my computer locked up at random times or what seems random. I have re-installed Windows and this does not fix it. I see no device conflicts so I am clueless as to the reason for this. I have a utility that fixes the Registry and looks for unusual things that happens but this gives me no usfull information.
