Windows Product key of a crashed computer

by sdruid11 . Updated 12 years, 12 months ago

I’ve seen the utilities for finding the product key from a computer that is up and running, but how about a WinXP, or Win2k computer that won’t boot or even post, or even get to the point of blue-screening…I’m only left with the harddrive that has the windows installed on it.

Are there any utilities that will run from the
Dos prompt ?

What if I added this harddrive as a slave drive on another computer that is running WinXP or Win2k, will the utilities work there ?

When I do find the key, how do I determine which Windows the key is for if I don’t remember which version of Windows was installed on the computer like Win2k standard, Win2k Corporate, WinXP Corporate, WinXP Home, WinXP Pro, WinXP MediaCenter, etc…??

BTW: Assuming I have a running computer, can I use Regedit to go into the registry to find my product key without having to use utility programs ??

Also, can I use Regedit to pull up the registry from the old harddrive and retrieve the product key that way ?

thanks…
