WINDOWS XP HOME NOT BOOTING

hi i’m running win xp home i turned it on and it came up with \system32\hal.dll is missing and wouldn’t boot so i put in my my os cd and i tried to let windows fix the problem now when it reboots the windows loading screen comes up but it freezes and reboots my hard drive has two partions so i re installed xp on the other partion so at boot up it gives me two options now the partions are in ntfs instead of system32 can i fix the partion that is corupt and keep my original xp instalation thanks george
