Windows XP repair without original disc

A few days ago my computer refused to boot after a power outage and I got blue screened(Non mountable disc error). My version of Windows is XP Pro. I want to do a Winows repair but can’t find the original disc. I tried to boot up from a friends XP Pro CD but didn’t get offered the option of a repair only a full installation. Is a repair impossible without the original disc? If I do need to do a reinstallation with a new CD is there anyway I can save my old files i.e. photos etc. I have stored on my hard drive? FYI Right now I only have a single partition.
