Most common problems in Windows XP can be explained by a very small number of problems. I am putting together a kind of universal fix for windows XP problems. This is NOT for the average user. Just to let it sink in (THIS IS NOT FOR THE AVERAGE USER) there is a a lot of stuff that can go wrong while you are doing this stuff, if you don’t know exactly how to do the stuff I’m describing STOP, give it to your smart teenager or leave it up to a professional. This will fix permissions errors, script errors, problems displaying pages in Internet explorer, it will also provide a free and safe way to keep a computer system clean and secure. I will edit this post and give links to all of these tools and a link to instructions for the maintenance software that I provide for my customers. Install, update and run scans on each of these.
(pre steps)
run msconfig
goto the services tab, check hide microsoft services, then click disable all
goto the startup tab and click disable all
in the control panel goto add/remove programs and uninstall any toolbars, and security programs (nortons mcaffee any of that crap)
Restart the computer
install update and/or use these
1) AVG rootkit remover (un-install after use) C
2) C-Cleaner (keep)
3) Malwarebytes anti-malware (keep)
4) Spy-bot Search and Destroy (uncheck tea-timer during setup – keep installed after use)
5) Super Anti-Spyware (un-install)
6) Avg free antivirus (keep)
7) Spyware Blaster (keep)(no scans just protection)
8) Disable system restore and restart the computer
9) open the command prompt and run these commands
“netsh winsock reset”
“ipconfig /flushdns”
restart the computer
10) Windows updates (If possible – – if you cannot, then come back to this after you do the rest)
11) Window XP service pack 3 access denied fix
12) Windows update fix tool
13) windows installer cleanup tool
14) Windows XP Security reset tool
restart
15)Run a full scan disk (will require restart)
16) Defrag
17) turn back on system restore
now would be the time to run windows update if you could not previously.
I thinks that’s about it. I will update this very soon with links and some more detail if people say they need it.
Thanks for reading and good luck!
