I have been evauluating Windows XP for government agency I am currently working for. I downloaded a file to was to supposed to be a boot partition manager to make a dual boot scenario easier with an NT operating system in place. This file turned out to be a back door all zipped up in a file called bootman.zip. The file in side was a file called “crack for windows xp rc1 licencing.exe” I knew something was odd about this and decided to run McAfee v4.5.0.534 with the 4.0.4150 definitions in place. It found it as a back door trojan. I deleted the file and thought my problems were solved. Now, to the good part of this story, Windows XP makes random restore points of your computer in case of a needed roll back of system files, well it actually made a restore point with this virus intact. The only reason I know this “NOW” is that McAfee found it again later of course sending out yet another alert. What is the rest of the worlds thoughts on this subject.
