Iam still having a problem with WINS. Ihave an NT4 network set up with 1 NT4 server and 30 pcs on 1 segment and 2 more pcs on a 2nd segment. The IP for segment 1 and 2 are the same accept that the 3rd octet is a 1 and 2 respectively. Ex: 99.99.1.x for segment 1 and 99.99.2.x for segment 2. The subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 on both segments. I have the WINS service started on the server and have entered the WINS IP on the 2 PCS on the 2nd segment. I checked all the network settings on the 2 pcs on segment 2 and they are correct. I can see 1 remote pc from the server net neighborhood but not the other. From both pcs on segment 2 I was able to map a drive to the server. Why can’t I see both PCS on segmnet 2? Why cant’ the pcs on segment 2 see the pcs on segment 1? The 2 segments have different workgroup names. Is this causing a problem? Do all the PCS on the entire network need to be running WINS? Do I need to also install the NetBEUI protocol? I have read and have been told that I need to setup a WINS proxy on the 2nd segment. Is this true? If so how do I? This topic isn’t discussed to greatly in the many books that I have read. Can a Win 9x machine be set up to be a WINS Proxy? I have tried all that I know but I am still stuck. Please help.
