WinXP crash

by jdclyde . Updated 20 years, 11 months ago

System hangs on boot.

Last week as I left for the holiday, I set my pc to do a scan disk, rebooted and left. When I came back five days later, it had hung at 30% on 5 of 5.

When I tried to reboot, it still wants to do the scan disk. I cancel this, it processes for a minute and then it reboots.

I have tried safe mode several times as well. When doing safe mode, it hangs at \windows\system32\drivers\gernuwa.sys

I rebooted and let it finish the scan disk (and two hours later) if finished the scan, starts to load and then reboots. It then wants to perform the scandisk AGAIN! If I interupt this, it hangs.

Tried to run the “repair” off the XP disk, but it isn’t recognising the Admin password and won’t let me go any further with it.

NTFS file system.

While I wouldn’t lose much if I have to wipe, it is still more than I would like to have to recreate (if you know what I mean).
