WinXP ‘services’ out of control

Ever since the latest bout of WinXP Hotfixes updated my fujitsu notebook (SP2), my “services” service runs out of control constantly sucking CPU time, causing overheating and constant fan running. What’s up with this? Do I dump the security hotfixes or risk damage to my cpu?
