Word 2003 Doc…Columns and Page Numbering Impossible?

Is it completely impossible to page number a document in Word that has many columned sections? I know the columns create section breaks, but I need them. I have created a 150 page cookbook for my child’s school and each recipe has a columned section for the ingredients. There may be two or three columnned sections per page. This has made me nuts for days. I’ve tried some things I’ve read online to no avail. The book needs to go to print in two weeks. I’d appreciate any advice.
