Word 2003 unexpectedly closes down

I am having a problem with a client running Word 2003 with Windows XP Pro. It is a problem that is present on 3 machines within the same company. MS Word closes down after a certain amount of time (sometimes seconds) when typing a document. No error message is given or any warning that is going to close – not even a prompt to save your work. When Word is set as the Outlook editor, the same thing happens with new messages.

We took one of them away and cleared the disk and re-programmed from completely, we then put the email messages etc back into machine from a .pst backup file. The same thing happened within minutes of using the machine. We deleted the .pst file and created a new blank one and it all works ok.

The only solution we have been able to give them is to delete all their emails – which is course isn’t ideal. Our tec guys have run virus scans, checked hardware, memory etc but all test results come out ok. Anyone got a suggestion?
