Word Compatibility Mode Problem

I use Word 2007, but I occasionally run across a Word .doc document that I cannot open. I receive the dialog box “Microsoft Office Word has stopped working” and it goes into a mode of trying to find a solution, which it does not find. The title bar shows that Word 2007 is using Compatibility Mode to open the file. When I click to close the dialog box, the whole file closes. I can open other .doc files, but there are certain ones that create this problem. If I go to another PC, they open fine, even with Word 2007. The particular file in question at this moment does have nested tables, if that is of any help. I do not know if this is a common thread.
