My XP Pro Service Pack 2 system boots up very quick, but hangs for about one minute in the middle of loading programs. From what Ive read on line I thought it might have to do with DHCP server, although I dont really understand the issue. I have a Yahoo SBCGlobal DSL connection which uses DHCP server. I dont have it set to connect when I load up–I connect manually. But I guess the DHCP still wants to do something during the startup process. When I look in Event Viewer to see what is happening, just about the time where it seems to “wake up” out of its one-minute hang, I see an Exclamation Mark-Warning (I think it has the title ‘dhcp’ ) and this message:
“Your computer has automatically configured the IP address for the network card with network address 00016C28D8AC. The IP address being used is 169.254.1167.101”
This same exact message (with same IP address) occurs in the Event Viewer every time I boot up. Will this problem go away if I shell out the bucks to SBCGlobal for a static IP address? Or is there a cheaper fix???
