After recently being infected by a rootkit and re-installing XP Pro I decided to be a little more diligent in respect to my system’s security.
Today I started using the Security Configuration and Analysis snap-in in the MMC – I found it easily enough and imported a Security Template and applied it (setup security.inf).
Now, after applying the template, I can no longer download any files from the internet in Internet Explorer.
Please don’t simply suggest using Firefox cuz it doesn’t ‘fix’ the problem. I already have firefox and several other browsers that I use to test webpages in – other browsers don’t ‘fix’ the problem – they’re simply a work-around.
I have attempted to simply alter security settings for zones and also made zones settings changes in the registry with no beneficial effect in the ability to download (still can’t download).
As I am not a security expert and definately not an expert in using the Security Templates within the MMC I would appreciate it if someone could point out a specific setting within the “setup security.inf” template, registry or elsewhere that might be the culprit and/or root of the non-downloading problem.
