You’ve got too much power…

A friend of mine is the IT manager for a two man shop. He’s built the department from a rat’s nest comm closet to multiple server WAN environment that supports thousands of users. His supervisor (CFO) came by for lunch and pointed out to him that he had too much power. “What if you got hit by a bus tomorrow, where would we be?” My friend reassured him saying that the network was all documented and the passwords to the servers were in a book in a secured file. The conversation went on but included, “Maybe we should bring in a consultant to look around…” My friend is not happy. He’s taken this mechanical 10-key operation to a modern IT department by himself. He’s thinking they’re going to give him the axe. The questions are, how can we communicated with management that he doesn’t have too much power? That given for example the passwords to the servers, that someone qualified could pick up and administer the network. As with any person that has “access” there should be checks and balances. Is there something that can be implemented to use as reassurance for management that they have the right person for the job.

Thanks for your help.

Ben
