AMD or Intel

I wanna buy a laptop. Which configurations are best for high speed either for AMD or intel? I will be using lot of softwares and high RAM (512MB).I have heared Intel Core duo 2 is a fast processor, but its too costlier for me. Can i get the same processing power with any AMD configurations at cheaper Prices. Give me the configurations and suggestions.
