This question comes from a friend of mine working in Kazakhstan. Here’s what he says:
“I am seeking advice on an Internet-related question. The Green Movement Center, the environmental NGO that is my primary employer here in Kazakhstan, is seeking a new home for a Web page devoted to the Asia-Irbis project. Asia-Irbis is an international research effort to save the Central Asia snow leopard, a rare and beautiful species in this part of the world.
Currently, Asia-Irbis’s page is located on a Russian ISP server that is unstable and hard to access; the people involved would like to place it (preferably free of charge) on a server in the U.S. or Western Europe that can serve as a more stable host.
My question is this: among the dozens of free Web page hosting sites available on the Net, which might be a good home for a page such as this? I am aware of major Web page collections such as AOL or Yahoo’s GeoCities and have a list of others, but I lack the experience to judge which are good hosts or not, or might be uniquely qualified for hosting and advertising NGOs.
If you have any thoughts or advice (positive or negative) on this matter, please let me know as soon as possible; any and all help is appreciated. Thanks!”
