Cannot read JPED image photos

I burned 900 or so photos from my pictures onto DVD-RW using Nero Start smart. They came up as JPEG Image. When I tryto see the photos I am told file(s)is/are either damaged or wrong format to read. Some of the photos are old family snaps and from foreign family visitors. I’ve used different types of programs but so far no success. Please HELP.
