Having a problem on a small SBS 2003 network and would really appreciate some help.
ISP for broadband is BT Internet.
Domain name for emails xxx.co.uk is hosted by 1and1.
Have set up correct MX record on 1and1 hosting for the domain name and users can receive emails fine (user@xxx.co.uk)
However, the problem is when sending emails.
Have set up “Use DNS to route e-mail” in the CEICW for sending.
When send an email to a hotmail address get an ‘undeliverable’ message saying Windows hotmail does not like mail from dynamic IP’s.
When send to other addresses get nothing. I have tried btinternet, yahoo, & 1and1 addresses.
When I go to check the outbound exchange mail queue on the server, other email addresses are queue’d there eg:
SmallBusiness SMTP connector – zzz.co.uk (SMTP connector)
and it sits on retry (except for the hotmail one which disappears after a while once I have received the above error message)
I have tried btinternet and 1and1 smarthosts – but they require authentication etc.
Our IP address with BT Internet is dynamic and I use a gotdns dynamic hosting address to receive emails and for remote access etc.
Obviously, hotmail make things clear – they do not like our emails becasue our IP address is dynamic. Is it the same with the other providers – except they don’t bother giving error messages – just refuse the email?
Is there a way around this problem if a dynamic address is causing all the problems (without paying extra for a static one that is)? Can we somehow use the gotdns address for this?
Is there a way of entering authenticating user and password info with a smarthost (eg auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk) within the SBS 2003/Exchange setup? (like you do with a standard POP/SMTP email address)
Any advice would be most welcome.
