Certifications mania

by dilipj . Updated 19 years, 2 months ago

In my 20 years of working in IT industry, I am observing growing fascination and demand for various certifications. Previously there were no certifications. Today also 80% of skilled manpower is not having so called “certifications” with them but still they are performing extremely well. Experienced professionals are giving outstanding results even if they are not certified. There is no significant addition in the knowledge of experienecd professionals due to certrification.

I have not seen any remarkable change in working quality ONLY after ISO certification.

I have not seen that some company is CMM certified and then ONLY it started working efficiently and systematically. It was before certification also. Only reporting formats got changed.

I have not seen any Project Manager performing smartly ONLY because he had passed PMI’s exam.

All non-certified Java or .net programmers in my team are performing very well.

How come a person can overcome another more experienced person just because he is certified one?

Is there really a need of certification if you are experienced? In today’s professional world is it just a mean of earning money (For certifying institutions)?

Does getting a certification in ‘Academic’ style or just ‘Getting prepared’ for certifications because they are in (artificial) demand in Market, adds any value to actual performance?

Are we responding overwhelmingly or giving ‘more’ value to certifications and becoming ‘Slave’ of the trend than honouring the experience?
