Compiler and interpreter

Hi. This is Ashwin from India. I m a student at JSSATE(B.Tech, 1st year).
I m a beginer at c language programing.

The question i have is that what is the difference b/w a compiler and interpreter.
As i read, a interpreter is better than a compiler, still a compiler is prefered. Why?
