Computer Rename in XP & Lost User Files

There was a problem with a Windows XP connecting to an NT Server. A message appeared about a duplicate computer name. I renamed the computer as I have successfully done many times before for other operating systems. When the computer restarted a user name along with the settings (My Documents, desktop, etc.) were gone. The computer name and the missing login name were the same name. How can I recover the missing My Documents?
