I am having a peculiar problem that I’ve seen asked about several times on the internet and forums, but no one seems to have answers. I really need to fix this problem so I figured I’d bring up the issue again.
LAYOUT:
Router
DHCP
Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition R2
Domain controller/DNS
Windows XP Pro
ISSUE:
Initially I can add the workstation to the domain with absolutely no problem. I can add drive mappings with no problem. After a while I get an error that the mapped drives are inaccessible. If I click on the drive to view it’s contents I’m presented with a logon request. If I try and login with my current login account I am presented with the following message “The user name you typed is the same as the user name you logged in with. The user name has already been tried. A domain controller can not be found to verify that user name.” If I try and log in with my administrator account I can login to the folder again as administrator. So that shows there IS in fact a domain controller, but for some reason the account can’t be verified or something. I have read that this might be a DNS issue, but I don’t know what kind of issue as there is never definitive instructions or and explanation as to what a DNS issue means. I’ve also heard that sometimes a domain controller pointing to itself for DNS can cause issues. If that’s the case then why does in domain controller upgrade procedure say it’s setting up the new domain controller to point to itself for DNS? Anyways with the current info on this issue can anyone please shed a light on it? When I get to the site I’ll include some IPCONFIG info for the workstation and server systems.
