DataType greyed-Excel 97 to Access 97

We’re trying to import an Excel 97 file into a new table in a blank Access 97 database. During the import process, there is the window that allows you to choose the data type. It’s greyed out but has Double in the field. We want it to be text or a simple number. Even if we change the type in Excel, it still displays as a scientific number in Access and won’t let us control the data type. Any ideas???
