Dell 3000,lost password,cd won’t boot

by sjvcvet . Updated 18 years, 11 months ago

I brought home from work a Dell 3000 with a bad network card to use as a backup machine. It was part of a group of computers hit by lightning- but all that went bad wwas the network card.I erased a bunch of garbage-AOL,music utilities, etc. Loaded AVG anti virus , installed a USB g wireless connector and removed the computer from the work network and joined my home workgruop. All well, no problems. I had to restart after the changes, when I did my password splashscreen came up and I no longer have a password that works. I have tried all my usual admin passwords, the password I had always used, guest(disabled)- nothing works.
I found a hack to use with a windows recovery disc. Changed boot order to boot cd first. I know it works cause the USB adapter had a cd disc install routine.I get to the press any key to boot from cd, the cd light comes on, I do NOT hear a spinning disc, the light goes off and all I see is a blinking cursor on the screen.
I may have a giant lightning strike doorstop, but since everything wqorked until I changed from domain to workgroup I reaaly think that is a Win problem. Any ideas on how to get my CD to spin?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Mark
