Diagnostic Partitions for HP laptops

I bought a second-hand HP laptop and I wasn’t supplied the recovery disk. I suspect that there may a cooling problem, or a problem with the fan. I have downloaded a package containing diagnostic partition software from HP. This is a self-extracting file however, it will only extract to a diagnostic partition prepared in advance to certain requirements. I would like to know how to manually prepare such a diagnostic partition if it is possible.
