DNS – Hosts File

Hello, I have the following scenario.

(1)Windows 2k wkstn no entries in Hosts file and successful ping by hostname.
(2)Windows 2k wkstn no entries in Hosts file and no successful ping by hostname. And I have to put an entry according of the hostaname what i want.

Why this happens?
