Domain Names and Self Hosting

If you host your own site on your own in-house web server, I can see that it is necessary to still purchase a domain name from a domain name service.
My question is: If I house and serve my own web, How can I use my domain name as my email domain? bob@mycompany.com?
Is this also a service that the domain service provides?
