Drives lost, will not boot from HD

by mkrobison . Updated 26 years ago

I have an HP 7110Z, pentium, 120 mhz, 1.2 gig HD, 24XCD Rom, and internal zip drive. When I attempted to run software requiring a CD, I got the “file not found, check path” message and found that my CD drive was no longer installed. I attempted theauto install (windows 95), as well as manual install using disk, but no go. I then went into the box to check connections. When I went to boot up, the system requested a system disk. Going into Bios, I found the only drive avail. was A. By disconnecting everything except the HD and A, the Bios will recongince the HD, but will not boot from it. I also changed boot order to floppy then hard.

Also, if I hook all devices back up (A, HD, CD Rom, zip) my monitor does not work on reboot.

Also, using a startup floppy, I can see HD files except when I try to list the files (dir) in the windows\system directory it says sector is not available.

Any ideas on how to procede next? How do I get a boot from the HD? How do I get into windows? Why would hooking all devices up cause video to go down? If I unplug the Zip or the zip and cdrom, the monitor is back up on reboot. Bios has yet to recognize either the cd rom or the zip.

Thanks for any help.
