I’m employed by a small corporate chain, 7 buildings total including the corporate office.
The president wants to leave our current web host and have the site run from our own server. It’s an e-commerce site that will have somewhere around 20,000 products or more by the time it’s done.
I’ve looked at the server machines, and the cost of buying one seems acceptable.
What I need is information on actually building from there.
ISP companies in the areas of our stores (located in Michigan) don’t offer speeds beyond 6mb / second upload, which I believe is rather low. Is there a way around that?
Security is naturally a problem. Vendors of the server machines assure me that the firewalls built in are very effective, but obviously we want the max possible. Anyone know where I can read up on that?
I’ve been tossed in over my head on this, but if I can find the relevant information, I can get the help I need. If there’s something I need to know or that I haven’t mentioned, please feel free to tell me about it and/or send a link.
Addendum: search engines lead me to vague references to T1 and T3 lines. Wikipedia was of course full of unintelligible facts on that. What is a T1 or T3 line?
