Ethernet port not working on my Dell Dimension 4500 desktop

by water145 . Updated 19 years, 1 month ago

I am trying to set-up my home network using a D-Link Wireless G Router model WBR1310 with my cable modem (an RCA model). Windows does not recognize the router (the message comes back that there is “no connectivity…”) when I plug into the ethernet port with the appropriate ethernet cable (following all the manufacturers instructions). I experimented with just using the cable modem alone on my computer (which will be the host computer) to check where the problem may be. The ethernet port connection would not work, but when I used the USB cable port, I was able to get an internet connection. I even went and purchased a new ethernet cable in case the problem was with the cable, but it still didn’t work. I’m pretty sure the problem lies in my ethernet port.

How do I go about solving this problem? I’ve runned registry repairs, updated drivers, but nothing has worked so far. Any suggestions? I’m about to have a brain hemorrhage because I’ve been trying to solve this problem for the last 3 days to no avail.

My computer: Dell Dimension 4500 XP/SP2
