Excel 2003 strangeness

One of our users is having an issue with excel 2003. When trying to save a file, if any changes have been made to it and the user changes the file type it crashes and all work is lost. However if the format is changed before any changes are made then it works fine.

Anyone else experienced strangeness like this?

The knowledge base was of no use.
