External Hardrives

Hi I was just wondering what people though about using external harddrive. I have heard that they are prone to failure.
Is there one that is considered the most reliable?
Is their reliability tied into their size, i.e. the bigger the more reliable, the smaller the less reliable, or vica versa?
What manufacturers make the best/ worst harddrives?
Etc.
